E. F. PAYNE ROD CO. - MAKERS, NY
MODEL "DARK ROD, 201"
8' 3PC 2 TIP 4 WT
LIGHT DF ROD
"This Jim Payne/Frank Oram Rod #44 is an example of the Dark Rod, Model 201, liisted in the 1925 Payne Catalog, #44 was made in
1926. That numbering system was short lived. In my rod making career of over 50 years, I've only seen 2 rods using that system.
While working to restore the rod at Payne, I discovered that under the butt cap on the reel seat, #44 was also stamped in the wood.
The restoration and ownership of the rod has been an honor.
The rod was originally made for James Marble, who invented WD40. He owned the Algonquin Club on the Upper Beaverkill,
where he tried to introduce Atlantic Salmon.
The people in the picture are from R - L - Jim Payne, James Marble, (in the white shirt), and standing behind the little girl is Charlie Speer,
who was Jim Payne's best friend and maker of the Payne Reel, which is included with this rod.
I hope you may enjoy owning this rod and reel as much as I have for many years.
Sincerely, Walt Carpenter"
